None of the charts I’ve seen documenting the components of known original rifles show LMR barrels on HRA rifles in the 4 million serial # range. Their total delivery of completed rifles for fiscal year 1953 amounted to only 500. HRA had already been making M-1 Garand replacement barrels under government contract in 1951 well before they began building complete rifles. H&R receivers with LMR barrels were the initial starting point for the first batches of accurized National Match M1 Garand rifles. I have them on a couple of M1 Garand rifles and they are very accurate. These LMR barrels are considered to be of very high quality, and I can attest to that. "Line Material Corporation" of Birmingham, Alabama (marked "LMR" - Line Material Rifle) was contracted to manufacture barrels for use by H&R and International Harvester. There is a subset of the H&R M1 Garand rifles that I think deserves a particularly good reputation.ĭuring production, Springfield and H&R were unable to manufacture all their own barrels and still deliver the quantity of rifles needed on schedule.
That includes a bolt assembly fixture, the proper wrench for the gas cylinder nut and proper barrel erosion and headspace gauges. This is a unique mechanism, and if you're going to own a Garand, you need the special tools to maintain it. Many people think that the cylinder has to be tightened down on the barrel, but this will destroy accuracy by interfering with the normal barrel resonance points. The front guard must be loose, with perhaps a credit card's thickness of play behind the gas cylinder.
It's important to understand the concept of barrel resonance and how to properly adjust and install the hand guards and gas cylinder to the barrel of this rifle. They are mechanically unique, and quite a remarkable balanced design. I help introduce this remarkable true battle rifle to attendees. I picked it out at one of the CMP competition events held here in North Carolina (they brought the equivalent of a small CMP store to the event). IIRC, one of my LMR equipped H&R M1 Garand rifles was purchased as a CMP Field Grade because of stock condition.
